Risk factors

What is a toxic risk?

The toxic risk is due to two factors: the inherent toxicity of a product and the level of exposure of persons. The risk also depends on the individual susceptibility. The nature of the processes and procedures determine the possibility that nanoparticles come into contact with the organism. The quality of confinement, the means of protection, and the procedures allow us to reduce the potential risk

In the absence of stable data on toxicity, controlling the health risk is based on controlling the exposure, which should be as limited as possible.

Exposure parameters.

In addition, to the choice of an appropriate unit of measurement, the dose of exposure to nanoparticles in a professional situation depends on 6 parameters:

  • the Products used: raw materials, intermediate and final products, quantity and characteristics (fine or granular powders, colloids),
  • their propensity to go into suspension or to be deposited,
  • the process implemented and the confinement planned at each stage,
  • the recommended procedures for each stage of the process, including the duration of exposure,
  • the effectiveness of Collective Protection Equipment (ventilation, glove box, etc.),
  • the effectiveness of Individual Protection Equipment (masks, gloves, etc.).
